Define the action, not just the device
Start with the operational event you want to capture. For example, a measured value could be attached to a quality check, or a scan could identify an item at a workstation. Describe what the user does today and which manual step the connection should remove.
Check compatibility before buying hardware
Record the exact device model, connection type, operating environment and intended business application. Odoo’s IoT documentation describes connecting physical devices through an IoT system. That does not mean every device and workflow will work without assessment. Confirm the proposed combination before committing to equipment.
Plan for the working environment
Ask where the device will be used, who maintains it and what happens if connectivity is lost. Check practical requirements such as power, access and network availability. Define a manual fallback so a connection problem does not leave staff without a way to continue.
Run a small pilot with real users
Use one workstation or one clearly bounded process. Test routine activity and exceptions, including repeated inputs and interrupted connections. Compare the result with the original workflow: are records accurate, is manual entry reduced and can users recover from common problems?
Expand only after the pilot is understood
Document the setup and decide who handles device issues, application issues and user questions. Carry forward what you learned before adding more devices or locations. A repeatable process is more valuable than a demonstration that only works under ideal conditions.
